Trivalent influenza split vaccine (inactivated) is a seasonal vaccine designed to provide active immunization against three strains of the influenza virus: two subtypes of Influenza A (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and one lineage of Influenza B (either Victoria or Yamagata). Developed and manufactured by companies such as Abbott Biologicals B.V., this vaccine is produced by growing the virus in embryonated chicken eggs, followed by inactivation with formaldehyde or beta-propiolactone and disruption (splitting) with detergents like Triton X-100. This splitting process reduces the reactogenicity of the vaccine compared to whole-virus preparations while maintaining the immunogenicity of the surface antigens, hemagglutinin and neuraminidase. The vaccine stimulates the production of antibodies that neutralize the virus, preventing infection and reducing the severity of the disease. Trivalent formulations were the standard for seasonal flu prevention for decades before the widespread adoption of quadrivalent vaccines.
