Trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) and FluMist are two distinct types of flu vaccines. It works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against these viral proteins without causing disease. FluMist is a brand name for the live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), which contains weakened but live forms of the same three or four strains found in other flu vaccines. FluMist stimulates both mucosal and systemic immune responses. TIV has been widely used for decades; LAIV/FluMist was developed as an alternative for those who prefer needle-free vaccination or have needle phobia. Both are indicated primarily for prevention of seasonal influenza.
