Overview

Inhaled Cannabis (UCSD) refers to a specific investigational botanical drug product consisting of vaporized cannabis flower containing delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). It is being evaluated by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial for the acute treatment of migraine attacks in adults. The study investigates various potencies of inhaled cannabis, including formulations with approximately 2.5%, 5%, and 10% THC, as well as combinations such as 6% THC and 11% CBD. The therapeutic effect is thought to be mediated through the activation of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), which may inhibit the release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and modulate trigeminovascular neurons involved in migraine pathogenesis.
