Overview

This therapeutic regimen consists of a combination of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and formoterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA). Inhaled corticosteroids, such as fluticasone or budesonide, function as potent anti-inflammatory agents by activating glucocorticoid receptors, thereby reducing airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation. Formoterol acts as a bronchodilator by stimulating beta-2 adrenergic receptors on airway smooth muscle, leading to prolonged muscle relaxation and improved airflow. This combination is a standard maintenance treatment for asthma. Nemours Children's Clinic conducted a Phase 4 crossover study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of adding formoterol to ICS therapy in pediatric asthma patients, specifically investigating whether genetic polymorphisms in the ADRB2 gene (Arg16 vs Gly16) influence clinical outcomes and the risk of asthma worsening.
