Overview

Inhaled corticosteroids + long acting beta agonists (ICS/LABA) are fixed-dose combination medications delivered via a single inhaler for the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The two components act synergistically to control airway inflammation and bronchoconstriction. Inhaled corticosteroids suppress airway inflammation by modulating gene transcription and reducing inflammatory mediator release. Long-acting beta agonists stimulate β2-adrenergic receptors on airway smooth muscle to induce bronchodilation and also inhibit mast cell mediator release. The combined use improves lung function, reduces exacerbations, enhances quality of life in moderate-to-severe COPD or persistent asthma compared to monotherapy with either agent alone. Commonly used combinations include fluticasone/salmeterol (Advair/Seretide), budesonide/formoterol (Symbicort), and mometasone/formoterol (Dulera). Combination therapy is associated with improved adherence but may increase the risk of pneumonia in some patients[1][2][5][8].
