Inosine pranobex is a synthetic small-molecule drug that combines inosine with dimepranol acedoben (a salt of acetamidobenzoic acid and dimethylaminoisopropanol) in a 1:3 molar ratio. It functions primarily as an immunomodulator and indirect antiviral agent. Rather than targeting viral particles directly, it enhances the host's immune response by stimulating T-lymphocyte proliferation, increasing natural killer (NK) cell activity, and promoting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 and interleukin-2. It is also described as an analog of thymus hormones. The drug has been approved in various jurisdictions for the treatment of viral infections including herpes simplex, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), and respiratory viral infections, and has been investigated for managing immunodeficiency in patients with HIV/AIDS.
