Overview

IBE is a research-use-only growth factor cocktail consisting of insulin, 17β-estradiol, and epidermal growth factor (EGF). It is primarily utilized in neuroendocrinology research as an in vitro model to induce and study the transdifferentiation of anterior pituitary cells. Specifically, IBE treatment of GH3 rat somatotrope cells triggers a phenotypic shift into lactotropes, characterized by a significant decrease in growth hormone (GH) expression and a concomitant increase in prolactin (PRL) expression. This model facilitates the investigation of regulatory networks, transcription factor activity, and cellular plasticity in response to endocrine demand within the pituitary gland.
