Overview

Insulin + glucose is a therapeutic co-administration protocol rather than a single fixed-dose combination product. It is primarily utilized in two distinct clinical settings: the emergency management of **hyperkalemia** and the treatment of **hyperglycemia**, particularly in neonatal intensive care or parenteral nutrition contexts. In hyperkalemia, insulin is administered to facilitate the intracellular shift of potassium by activating the sodium-potassium pump, while glucose (typically as dextrose) is co-infused to prevent the development of hypoglycemia. In neonatal care, insulin infusions are often titrated against continuous glucose infusions to manage hyperglycemia and maintain glycemic stability in very preterm infants. The components are widely available as generic pharmaceuticals produced by numerous global manufacturers.
