Overview

Insulin glargine + insulin aspart is a combination of two distinct forms of recombinant human insulin analogs used in the management of diabetes mellitus. Insulin glargine is a long-acting basal insulin that provides a steady level of insulin over 24 hours, mimicking the body's natural basal secretion and helping to maintain fasting blood glucose levels[3][4]. Insulin aspart is a rapid-acting prandial (mealtime) insulin that acts quickly to control postprandial (after meal) blood glucose spikes by facilitating cellular uptake of glucose and inhibiting hepatic glucose production[1][2][8]. This combination regimen is commonly used in patients with type 1 diabetes, and sometimes in type 2 diabetes when intensive glycemic control is required. The two insulins are typically administered separately but may be prescribed together to provide both basal and bolus coverage.
