Overview

Insulin glargine and insulin glulisine are used together in a basal-bolus insulin regimen to manage blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes. Insulin glargine is a long-acting basal insulin analog that provides a steady level of insulin over 24 hours by forming micro-precipitates upon subcutaneous injection, which slowly release insulin into the circulation. Insulin glulisine is a rapid-acting bolus insulin analog with a quick onset and short duration of action, designed to control postprandial glucose levels. This specific combination was evaluated by Cairo University in a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT02442336) for the management of hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients with liver cirrhosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus, comparing its efficacy and safety against sliding scale regular insulin and NPH/regular insulin regimens.
