Overview

Insulin human regular + insulin isophane is a combination of two types of recombinant (human) insulins used to improve glycemic control in people with diabetes mellitus. It contains short-acting (regular) and intermediate-acting (isophane/NPH) insulins. The short-acting component helps manage blood glucose spikes after meals by acting within about 10–20 minutes of injection. The intermediate component provides basal coverage for up to 24 hours by releasing more slowly into the bloodstream[1][3]. This premixed formulation simplifies dosing for patients who require both rapid and sustained blood sugar control. Its mechanism of action involves binding to the insulin receptor on target cells (mainly muscle and fat), promoting cellular uptake of glucose from the bloodstream and inhibiting hepatic glucose production[1][3]. It was developed as part of efforts by major pharmaceutical companies such as Eli Lilly ("Humulin") and Novo Nordisk ("Novolin") to provide convenient options for diabetes management.
