Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Interferon + resveratrol is a combination of two agents—interferon (typically referring to interferon-alpha or other subtypes) and resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound found in plants such as grapes. This combination has been investigated primarily for its potential synergistic antitumor and antiviral effects. Interferons are cytokines with immunomodulatory, antiproliferative, and antiviral properties; they exert their effects by binding to cell surface receptors and activating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway, leading to increased expression of genes involved in immune response and apoptosis. Resveratrol is known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities; it can modulate multiple molecular targets including SIRT1 (sirtuin 1), NF-kappaB, STAT1 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 1), among others. Preclinical studies have shown that resveratrol can enhance the antiproliferative and proapoptotic effects of interferon-alpha on hepatocellular carcinoma cells via activation of SIRT1/STAT1 signaling[1]. In clinical settings such as hepatitis C treatment with pegylated-interferon alpha, supplementation with resveratrol was associated with improved patient-reported outcomes like reduced sleep disorders[5]. The combination has also been explored in cancer models using modified forms like interferon-elastin-like polypeptide plus resveratrol for enhanced intratumoral immune responses[4].
