Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of recombinant human interferon alfa-2b and an inert substance (placebo). Interferon alfa-2b is a type I recombinant protein produced by Escherichia coli using recombinant DNA technology. It acts as an immunomodulator, antiviral, and antineoplastic agent. Its mechanism involves binding to cell surface receptors, activating the JAK/STAT pathway, and inducing the expression of genes that inhibit viral replication and modulate immune responses. Interferon alfa-2b is used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C infections, hairy cell leukemia, follicular lymphoma, malignant melanoma (especially as adjuvant therapy), AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma, and genital warts. The addition of a placebo serves as a control in clinical trials to assess the efficacy or safety profile of interferon alfa-2b[1][3][5][8].
