Overview

Interferon-alpha + retinoic acid is a combination therapy consisting of two agents with distinct but complementary mechanisms. Interferon-alpha (IFN-α) is a cytokine with immunomodulatory, antiproliferative, and antiangiogenic properties. Retinoic acids (such as 13-cis-retinoic acid or all-trans-retinoic acid) are vitamin A derivatives that regulate cell differentiation and proliferation. The combination has demonstrated synergistic effects in preclinical models and clinical trials for various cancers—including advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and renal cell carcinoma—by enhancing malignant cell differentiation, inhibiting tumor growth, and modulating immune responses[1][2][3][4][5][6].
