This is a combination therapy consisting of recombinant interferon-alpha 2b (IFNα2b) and recombinant interleukin-2 (IL-2), both cytokines with immunomodulatory and antitumor properties. Interferon-alpha 2b is a type I interferon that exerts antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunostimulatory effects by binding to the type I interferon receptor on immune cells, leading to upregulation of genes involved in immune defense. Interleukin-2 is a T-cell growth factor that stimulates proliferation and activation of lymphocytes, particularly cytotoxic T cells and natural killer (NK) cells. The combination has been investigated primarily for advanced cancers such as metastatic renal cell carcinoma and melanoma, as well as for HIV infection due to its potential synergistic effects on immune modulation. Clinical studies have shown objective response rates in some cancer patients but no consistent improvement in overall survival compared to monotherapy or observation alone. Toxicities are generally consistent with those expected from each agent individually—mainly flu-like symptoms, fever, chills, nausea, hypotension—and can be dose-limiting[1][4][5][6].
