Interferon beta + interferon gamma is a combination of two recombinant cytokines, both members of the interferon family. Interferons are proteins with antiviral, immunomodulatory, and antiproliferative properties. Interferon beta (a type I interferon) upregulates MHC class I expression and enhances cytotoxic T cell responses, while also inducing key antiviral mediators. Interferon gamma (the only type II interferon) is primarily produced by activated T lymphocytes and natural killer cells; it has antitumor properties, broad immunoregulatory effects, and can synergize with other types of interferons for enhanced antiviral activity. The combination has been studied preclinically for its synergistic inhibition of viral replication—particularly acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1)—and may reduce viral loads in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts[1][4]. The mechanism involves cooperative activation of immune pathways leading to reduced viral replication and reactivation.
