This is a combination therapy consisting of interferon beta (a type of cytokine) and tamoxifen (a selective estrogen receptor modulator). Interferon beta exerts immunomodulatory and antiproliferative effects, while tamoxifen acts primarily as an antagonist of the estrogen receptor in breast tissue. The combination has been investigated for its potential synergistic antitumor activity, particularly in metastatic or advanced breast cancer. Preclinical studies have shown that the combination can enhance antiproliferative effects and upregulate interferon-stimulated gene expression beyond what is achieved by either agent alone, independent of estrogen receptor status. Clinical trials have demonstrated some objective responses in metastatic breast cancer patients, though overall efficacy improvement over tamoxifen alone was not established[1][2][7].
