Interferon beta-1a is a recombinant human protein in the class of immunomodulators and interferons. It is used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including clinically isolated syndrome (CIS), relapsing-remitting MS, and active secondary progressive MS. The drug works by binding to type I interferon receptors on cell surfaces, activating intracellular signaling pathways that reduce inflammation and modulate immune responses. This action helps decrease the frequency of MS relapses and slows disease progression by reducing immune-mediated damage to nerve cells. Interferon beta-1a is produced in mammalian cells using recombinant DNA technology; its amino acid sequence is identical to natural human interferon beta.
