Overview

Interferon beta-1a + doxycycline is a combination therapy investigated primarily for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), particularly relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) and secondary progressive MS (SPMS). Interferon beta-1a is an immunomodulator that binds to type I interferon receptors, activating the JAK/STAT pathway and upregulating antiviral proteins, reducing inflammation and preventing nerve damage. Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic with additional properties as an inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases, which may help protect neurons and oligodendrocytes. Clinical studies suggest this combination can reduce relapse rates and improve disability scores in MS patients, though effects on MRI lesion activity are less clear[1][2][3][5]. The combination has been found to be generally safe and well tolerated in small clinical trials.
