Interferon beta-1a HSA+ biosimilar is a recombinant protein drug that mimics the activity of natural human interferon beta. It is developed as a biosimilar to reference products such as Avonex and Rebif for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), including relapsing-remitting MS and clinically isolated syndrome. The "HSA+" designation indicates formulation with human serum albumin. Interferons are cytokines that modulate immune responses; this drug binds to type I interferon receptors on cell surfaces, leading to reduced inflammatory activity in the central nervous system by decreasing immune cell activation and migration across the blood-brain barrier. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated non-inferiority in efficacy and safety compared to originator products[3][4][5][8]. Biosimilars like those from BIOCAD (Russia), Biosidus (Argentina), and other regional manufacturers are approved or marketed in several countries outside the US/EU.
