This is a combination of two drugs: interferon beta-1b, a recombinant protein immunomodulator used primarily for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS), and atorvastatin, an oral small molecule statin used to lower cholesterol. Interferon beta-1b acts by decreasing inflammation and preventing nerve damage in MS through modulation of immune responses. Atorvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, reducing cholesterol synthesis and also exhibits anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. The combination has been studied in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) to assess whether adding atorvastatin to standard interferon beta therapy provides additional benefit; clinical trials have shown no significant improvement over monotherapy with interferon beta alone[1][2][5]. Both drugs are well-established pharmaceuticals with distinct primary indications.
