This drug is a recombinant fusion protein combining interferon kappa (IFN-κ), a type I interferon, and trefoil factor 2 (TFF2). Interferon kappa is part of the type I interferons, which are cytokines involved in innate immune responses against viral infections. TFF2 is a member of the trefoil factor family, peptides known for their role in protecting and repairing mucosal surfaces, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract. The combination aims to leverage both antiviral and mucosal protective properties. A phase I clinical trial has shown that inhaled recombinant TFF2-IFN protein was well tolerated with low systemic exposure in healthy volunteers, suggesting potential as an inhaled therapy for respiratory viral infections such as COVID-19[6][8]. The mechanism involves direct antiviral activity from IFN-κ through induction of antiviral genes via JAK/STAT signaling pathways and mucosal protection/repair from TFF2.
