Overview

This is a combination of two cytokine-based immunotherapies—an interleukin (most commonly interleukin-2, but could refer to other types) and a type I interferon (such as interferon-alpha or interferon-beta). Both are recombinant proteins that modulate the immune system. Interleukins stimulate the proliferation and activation of lymphocytes, enhancing anti-tumor immunity. Type I interferons have antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects; they activate immune cells such as natural killer cells and cytotoxic T lymphocytes while inhibiting tumor cell growth. The combination has been studied for synergistic effects in cancer therapy, particularly in melanoma and renal cell carcinoma, by promoting both direct tumor inhibition and enhanced immune-mediated cytotoxicity[1][2][3][7].
