Overview

Interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1α), human recombinant is a proinflammatory cytokine produced by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It plays a key role in innate host defense by triggering the production of other proinflammatory cytokines in target cells and initiating acute-phase responses. IL-1α signals through two receptors—IL-1RI and IL-1RII—shared with IL-1β. Its activity can be moderated by the naturally occurring antagonist protein IL-RA. The cytokine is involved in various immune responses, inflammatory processes (including sterile inflammation at sites of injury), hematopoiesis (blood cell formation), apoptosis induction following cell injury or necrosis. High levels of IL-1α are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.
