This is a combination therapy consisting of recombinant human interleukin-3 (IL-3) and sargramostim (recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, GM-CSF). Both are hematopoietic growth factors that stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of bone marrow progenitor cells. Interleukin-3 acts on early multipotent hematopoietic stem cells to promote the production of various blood cell lineages. Sargramostim binds to the granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor receptor (GM-CSF-R-alpha or CSF2R), activating JAK2/STAT1/STAT3 signaling pathways to stimulate survival, proliferation, and differentiation of myeloid lineage cells including neutrophils and macrophages[1][2]. The combination has been studied for its ability to reduce periods of neutropenia and thrombocytopenia following radiation or drug-induced marrow aplasia by enhancing recovery of white blood cells and platelets more effectively than either cytokine alone[2].
