Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Intravenous lipid emulsion comprised of fish oil, primarily known by the brand name Omegaven, is a specialized parenteral nutrition product composed of 100% fish oil triglycerides. It is rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Unlike traditional soybean oil-based emulsions, which are high in pro-inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids and phytosterols, fish oil emulsions exert anti-inflammatory effects by shifting the production of eicosanoids toward less inflammatory series and by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs). Its primary clinical indication is the treatment of parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD) and intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) in pediatric patients, where it has been shown to reverse cholestasis and improve liver function. It provides essential fatty acids and energy as part of a parenteral nutrition regimen when oral or enteral nutrition is not possible, insufficient, or contraindicated.
