Drug intelligence / Profile preview
REcN-FOS is an investigational prebiotic blend consisting of short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS, such as NutraFlora) and long-chain inulin (such as Raftiline HP). When combined with calcium carbonate, it is used to enhance intestinal calcium absorption and improve bone mineralization. The mechanism of action involves the fermentation of these prebiotic fibers by colonic bacteria, particularly Bifidobacteria, which leads to the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). The resulting acidification of the colonic lumen lowers the local pH, thereby increasing the solubility of calcium and facilitating its passive diffusion and active transport across the intestinal epithelium. This specific combination has been studied primarily in adolescent populations to optimize peak bone mass accrual and in postmenopausal women to mitigate bone loss.
