SERALB-125 is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent consisting of human serum albumin (HSA) radiolabeled with the isotope iodine-125 (125I). It is primarily used as a tracer to measure plasma volume and evaluate albumin kinetics, such as transcapillary escape rates and synthesis rates. The iodine-125 isotope emits low-energy gamma radiation and has a physical half-life of approximately 59.4 days. In clinical research, it has been utilized in Phase 4 pharmacokinetic studies at the Karolinska Institutet to investigate the impact of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) on albumin distribution and capillary leakage in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery, such as pancreatic resection. The product is manufactured by CIS Bio International (now part of Curium).
