Iodine + alcohol refers to a topical antiseptic solution commonly known as "tincture of iodine" or "iodine tincture." This preparation typically contains elemental iodine (usually 2–5%), potassium iodide or sodium iodide as a solubilizer, and ethanol (alcohol) as the solvent. The combination is used externally for its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties to disinfect minor wounds, cuts, scrapes, and burns. Iodine acts by disrupting microbial proteins and nucleic acids through oxidation and iodination reactions. The alcohol component enhances the penetration of iodine into tissues and contributes additional antiseptic action. Tincture of iodine is not intended for internal use due to toxicity risks; it should not be applied to large areas or deep wounds because systemic absorption can affect thyroid function or cause irritation/burns[1][5][6][7]. It is less commonly used today compared to povidone-iodine but remains available over-the-counter in many countries.
