Overview
iodine + ChloraPrep is a sequential preoperative skin preparation regimen consisting of an iodine-based scrub followed by the application of ChloraPrep, a branded antiseptic solution containing 2% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) and 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA). This combination is being evaluated by the Rothman Institute Orthopaedics as a method to reduce surgical site infections, particularly those caused by *Cutibacterium acnes* (formerly *Propionibacterium acnes*) in patients undergoing shoulder surgery. Iodine acts as a broad-spectrum antiseptic by oxidizing essential microbial proteins and nucleic acids. Chlorhexidine gluconate provides persistent antimicrobial activity by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, while isopropyl alcohol provides rapid bactericidal action through protein denaturation.
