This is a combination of two drugs, iododeoxyuridine and methotrexate. Iododeoxyuridine (IdUrd) is a halogenated pyrimidine analog that incorporates into DNA in place of thymidine, making DNA more susceptible to damage by ionizing radiation or radiolabeling. Methotrexate is an antimetabolite and antifolate agent that inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, leading to inhibition of DNA synthesis, repair, and cellular replication. The combination has been studied for synergistic effects in cancer therapy; thymidylate synthase inhibition by methotrexate can enhance the incorporation and cytotoxicity of iododeoxyuridine in tumor cells[8]. This approach aims to increase the therapeutic effect against rapidly dividing cancer cells while potentially allowing for more intense treatment regimens.
