Overview

ioflupane (123I) is a neuro-imaging radiopharmaceutical drug used in nuclear medicine for the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and the differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease over other disorders presenting similar symptoms (such as essential tremor). It is also used to assist in the evaluation of adult patients with suspected dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). It is a cocaine analogue labeled with the radioactive isotope iodine-123. It acts as a selective ligand with high affinity for presynaptic dopamine transporters (DAT) in the striatum of the brain. When injected intravenously, it crosses the blood-brain barrier and binds to DAT, allowing visualization of the density and distribution of dopaminergic neurons using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. It was originally developed by Cygne B.V. (which became part of Amersham, later acquired by GE Healthcare) and is marketed under the brand name DaTscan.
