iohexol + magnesium citrate is a combination regimen used for bowel preparation and fecal tagging in patients undergoing computed tomographic (CT) colonography. Iohexol is a non-ionic, water-soluble iodinated contrast agent that, when ingested orally, opacifies residual stool and fluid (fecal tagging), allowing for better differentiation between fecal material and colonic polyps or masses during imaging. Magnesium citrate is a saline osmotic laxative that increases fluid in the small intestine and promotes bowel evacuation. Together, they provide a cleansed and tagged colon, which enhances the accuracy of electronic subtraction software and improves the overall diagnostic quality of the imaging procedure for the detection of colorectal carcinoma and polyps.
