Overview

IPEC + cisplatin refers to a treatment regimen involving intraoperative intraperitoneal chemoperfusion with the platinum-based chemotherapy agent cisplatin. This approach is being investigated by University Hospital, Ghent, specifically in the OvIP1 trial for patients with stage III epithelial ovarian cancer and primary peritoneal cancer. The procedure involves the direct administration of cisplatin into the peritoneal cavity immediately following cytoreductive surgery to target minimal residual disease and prevent peritoneal recurrence. Cisplatin acts as a small molecule DNA alkylator, forming covalent intra-strand and inter-strand crosslinks that inhibit DNA replication and transcription, ultimately leading to cancer cell apoptosis. The OvIP1 study evaluates the impact of varying drug doses (75 mg/m², 100 mg/m², or 120 mg/m²) and perfusion temperatures (normothermic at 37°C versus hyperthermic at 41°C) on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the treatment.
