Overview

This is a combination drug consisting of ipratropium bromide, albuterol sulfate, and mannitol. Ipratropium bromide is an anticholinergic bronchodilator that works by blocking muscarinic receptors in the airways, leading to relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. Albuterol sulfate (also known as salbutamol) is a beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that stimulates beta-2 receptors in the lungs, resulting in bronchodilation. Mannitol is an osmotic agent sometimes used as an excipient or to facilitate inhaled drug delivery but does not have direct bronchodilatory effects. The combination of ipratropium and albuterol is commonly used for the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema to relieve symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath by providing dual bronchodilation through different mechanisms[1][2][3][5][6]. The addition of mannitol may be intended to improve aerosolization or delivery but it is not standard in marketed formulations.
