ipratropium bromide + sodium cromoglycate

Ipratropium bromide and sodium cromoglycate is a combination medication used in respiratory conditions. Ipratropium bromide is a quaternary ammonium compound with anticholinergic properties that acts as an antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, inhibiting vagally mediated reflexes and producing bronchodilation. Sodium cromoglycate is an inhibitor of mast cell mediator release. When used together, they can provide complementary effects in treating bronchospasm, particularly in asthma. Studies have shown that sodium cromoglycate can significantly reduce bronchoconstriction induced by various stimuli, while ipratropium bromide provides bronchodilation. However, it's important to note that ipratropium bromide solution with preservatives should not be mixed with sodium cromoglycate, as this produces a cloudy solution due to complexation between the preservatives and sodium cromoglycate. If both medications are needed, ipratropium bromide solution without preservatives (from unit dose vials) should be used in combination with sodium cromoglycate.
