IR780 + PLGA is a research-stage theragnostic nanoparticle platform consisting of the near-infrared (NIR) photosensitizer dye IR780 encapsulated within a biodegradable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) polymer matrix. This system is designed for dual-mode imaging and therapy, primarily utilizing photothermal therapy (PTT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT). Upon excitation by NIR light (typically 808 nm) or ultrasound, the IR780 component generates heat or reactive oxygen species (ROS) to induce tumor cell death or eliminate bacterial infections. The PLGA shell enhances the stability and biocompatibility of the hydrophobic IR780 dye, allowing for controlled release and improved tumor accumulation. While extensively studied in academic settings for indications such as breast cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and multidrug-resistant infections, it is not currently associated with a commercial pharmaceutical developer.
