Overview
Iron + folic acid is a fixed-dose combination of an iron salt (commonly ferrous fumarate, ferrous sulfate, or heme iron polypeptide) and the B vitamin folic acid. Iron is essential for hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell production, while folic acid is required for nucleoprotein synthesis and normal erythropoiesis. This combination is primarily used to treat or prevent anemia caused by iron or folate deficiency, including in pregnancy, chronic blood loss, metabolic disease, post-surgical convalescence, and other conditions associated with increased requirements or losses of these nutrients. The mechanism of action involves replenishing body stores of both iron (to support hemoglobin formation) and folate (to enable DNA synthesis in rapidly dividing cells such as erythroid precursors)[1][4][6][7].
