Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ferfix-FA is an oral hematinic combination preparation containing iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex (IPC) and folic acid (vitamin B9). Developed and marketed by Getz Pharma, it is indicated for the treatment of latent and manifest iron deficiency, as well as for the prevention of iron and folic acid deficiencies before, during, and after pregnancy (during lactation). The iron in Ferfix-FA is present as a stable, non-ionic macromolecular complex of polynuclear iron (III) hydroxide and polymaltose, which mimics the structure of physiological ferritin. This formulation allows for controlled, active absorption of iron in the gastrointestinal tract, minimizing mucosal irritation and preventing interactions with food. Folic acid acts as an essential cofactor for DNA synthesis, cell division, and erythropoiesis, working synergistically with iron to support red blood cell production and prevent neural tube defects.
