Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ferrofolin is a combination pharmaceutical product developed by SIT Farmaceutici (SIT Pharma) containing iron proteinsuccinylate and calcium folinate. Iron proteinsuccinylate is a gastro-resistant iron complex that minimizes gastric irritation by remaining insoluble at low pH and releasing iron in the alkaline environment of the duodenum. Calcium folinate (the calcium salt of folinic acid) is a derivative of folic acid that does not require reduction by dihydrofolate reductase to be active, making it an effective source of folate. This combination is primarily indicated for the treatment of iron deficiency anemias and folate deficiencies, particularly during pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding when requirements for both nutrients are increased.
