This therapeutic regimen consists of oral iron supplementation combined with the antiparasitic agents albendazole and metronidazole. It was evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial led by Cairo University to address anemia in pregnant women in rural Egypt, where parasitic infections are prevalent. Iron supplementation (typically ferrous sulfate or similar) is used to treat iron-deficiency anemia by replenishing systemic iron stores. Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic that interferes with tubulin polymerization in helminths, while metronidazole is an amoebicide and antiprotozoal that disrupts DNA synthesis in anaerobic organisms like *Entamoeba histolytica* and *Giardia lamblia*. The combination aims to improve hemoglobin levels more effectively than iron alone by eliminating parasites that contribute to blood loss and nutrient malabsorption.
