Overview

Isoflurane and sevoflurane are halogenated inhalational anesthetics used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia. Both affect the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor through similar mechanisms, influencing the open and closed states of the channels. Sevoflurane has a faster onset and often quicker recovery time compared to isoflurane due to its lower blood-gas solubility. Both drugs enhance inhibitory postsynaptic channel activity by binding to GABA-A and glycine receptors, while inhibiting excitatory synaptic channel activity by binding to nicotinic acetylcholine, serotonin, and glutamate receptors. They are commonly used in both human and veterinary medicine, with sevoflurane increasingly replacing isoflurane in modern anesthesia practice, particularly for outpatient procedures and pediatric anesthesia.
