Overview

Isoflurane + sufentanil is a combination of two anesthetic agents used together to induce and maintain general anesthesia, particularly in major surgeries such as cardiac surgery. Isoflurane is a volatile inhalational anesthetic that acts primarily by enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission via gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the central nervous system, leading to loss of consciousness and amnesia. Sufentanil is a potent synthetic opioid analgesic that acts as an agonist at the μ-opioid receptor, providing profound analgesia and contributing to hemodynamic stability during surgery. The combination allows for balanced anesthesia—isoflurane provides hypnosis while sufentanil offers strong analgesia—resulting in reduced stress response to surgical stimuli, stable cardiovascular parameters, and potentially faster recovery compared with higher doses of either agent alone[1][3][5]. This regimen is commonly used in settings requiring deep anesthesia with controlled hemodynamics.
