Overview

Isoniazid + amikacin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily in the treatment of tuberculosis, especially multidrug-resistant (MDR) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR) forms. Isoniazid is a first-line antimycobacterial agent that inhibits the synthesis of mycolic acids, essential components of the mycobacterial cell wall. Amikacin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that acts as a second-line agent for tuberculosis; it binds to bacterial 30S ribosomal subunits, inhibiting protein synthesis and leading to bacterial cell death. This combination may be used when resistance or intolerance to standard first-line agents occurs, particularly in regimens for MDR-TB[1][3][5][7].
