Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Gastobid is an oral fixed-dose combination tablet containing the long-acting anticholinergic agent isopropamide iodide (5 mg) and the typical phenothiazine antipsychotic trifluoperazine (1 mg). Developed by Thrift Pharmaceuticals, it is indicated for the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders, primarily irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), peptic ulcer disease, and indigestion. Isopropamide iodide acts as a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist, relaxing smooth muscles in the digestive tract to relieve painful spasms, cramps, and hypermotility. Trifluoperazine acts as a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist, providing mild anxiolytic and antiemetic effects to alleviate the emotional tension and anxiety that often trigger or exacerbate gastrointestinal distress.
