A combination antiseptic solution consisting of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 0.5% chlorhexidine. This specific formulation was evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial conducted by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid for use as a lavage solution during the surgical treatment of ingrown toenails. Specifically, it is used during chemical matricectomy (phenolization) to irrigate the wound and remove residual phenol. The combination of alcohol and chlorhexidine serves to dilute and wash away excess phenol more effectively than alcohol alone, thereby preventing tissue damage and reducing post-operative side effects such as persistent oozing or drainage. While both isopropyl alcohol and chlorhexidine are standard small molecule antiseptics, their use in this context is procedural, aimed at neutralizing the chemical effects of phenol in a surgical setting.
