Isotonic saline solution is a sterile, non-pyrogenic solution of 0.9% sodium chloride in water, which is osmotically balanced with human blood. In the context of clinical research at Istanbul University, it is utilized as a sham control (placebo) in a randomized, double-blind trial (NCT04843371) evaluating postoperative pain management. Specifically, it is administered via ultrasound-guided suprascapular and axillary nerve blocks to patients undergoing shoulder arthroscopy. This control arm allows researchers to establish a baseline for pain intensity, measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and opioid consumption via patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), thereby facilitating a comparison against the efficacy of varying dosages of bupivacaine.
