Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ispaghula husk + senna is a combination laxative product containing two plant-derived active ingredients: ispaghula husk (psyllium) and senna extract. Ispaghula husk acts as a bulk-forming laxative by absorbing water in the intestinal lumen to form a gel, which increases stool mass and stimulates natural contraction. Senna extract contains sennosides that are metabolized by colonic bacteria into active rheinanthrones, which directly stimulate the myenteric plexus and intestinal smooth muscle to increase peristalsis. This dual-action mechanism is indicated for the treatment of acute and chronic constipation and has been studied for efficacy in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease.
