Overview

ISCO PLUS is a fixed-dose combination anthelmintic medication containing ivermectin and albendazole, developed and marketed by Bennet Pharmaceuticals. Ivermectin is a semi-synthetic macrocyclic lactone that acts as a potent agonist of glutamate-gated chloride channels found in invertebrate nerve and muscle cells. This activation increases chloride ion permeability, leading to hyperpolarization, flaccid paralysis, and the eventual death of the parasite. Albendazole, a benzimidazole carbamate, complements this by inhibiting the polymerization of tubulin into microtubules, which disrupts essential metabolic processes such as glucose uptake and energy production in the helminths. This synergistic combination is primarily indicated for the treatment of various parasitic infestations, including soil-transmitted helminthiases (such as ascariasis and hookworm) and systemic infections like lymphatic filariasis.
