Overview

**Ivermectin + pyrantel** is an oral combination anthelmintic (anti-parasitic) drug formulation primarily used in dogs to prevent heartworm disease (Dirofilaria immitis) and to treat and control roundworm (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) and hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma braziliense) infections. Ivermectin is a macrocyclic lactone that binds to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in nematode nerve and muscle cells, causing paralysis and death of the parasites. Pyrantel, a tetrahydropyrimidine, acts as a depolarizing neuromuscular-blocking agent, resulting in paralysis of susceptible parasites, which are expelled by normal peristalsis. This combination is used as a monthly chewable for prevention and parasite control in veterinary medicine[1][2][4][5][6][9][12].
